www.postmagazine.com 2 POST AUGUST 2017 EDITOR'S NOTE ur annual "Music Video" feature is one of my favorites — as Linda Romanello will attest! Each summer we are inundated with new music video releases, some from well-known artists, and others from lesser known, but equally talented. Our August issue is the perfect time to highlight these short pieces, where in just a few minutes, artists are able to share their visions of what a track means to them. Believe it or not, music videos are evolving. In the early days of MTV, smoke and mirrors were the norm. Today, there are still traditional, narrative-driven videos and performance videos, but there are also 'lyric videos,' which often don't even feature the artist. Instead, they use graphics to lead viewers along. 'Play-through' videos have also become popular, showing viewers the nuances of the performance, be it a guitar player's chord changes or a drummer's rhythm technique. One thing is certain, music videos have no defining rules. The sky is the limit and often post pros take on these projects for the creative opportunities they present, if not necessarily for financial gain. Oscar Oboza, a colorist at Nice Shoes' Minneapolis office, calls music video work "a labor of love." He regularly works on commercials for agency clients, which go through many levels of approval. Music videos, he says, offer much more room for interpreta- tion, and as a colorist who uses a Baselight system, he enjoys that freedom. The Afghan Whigs like his work and recently reconnected with Oboza for their Oriole video. Music video work can also be a lesson in resourcefulness, as director/editor Lightfield Lewis points out. He recently completed Alexander Jean's Paper Planes, and solved a number of challenges on the fly. Need to shoot guerrilla style in an LA river bed? Look for a hole in the fence. Need to create the look of a murky lake? Put a dark tarp at the bottom of a swimming pool. These projects, their challenges and solutions, as well as others, can be found in this month's feature on page 20, as well as on postmagazine.com. admit it — I've spent countless hours in front of the television or on my lap- top, binge-watching Orange is the New Black, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt or Stranger Things. When you have an entire season of a hot series right at your fingertips, and you've waited almost a year to watch it, it's just too tempting to not hit that "play" button…for just "one more episode" before going to bed! Streaming video content has become a phenomenon. All the rage. The biggest thing since…well, you get the idea. And with a multitude of distribution platforms, such as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime, there's more content now than ever. Which, of course, is great news for our community, which is regularly called on to post these shows. If you look at some of the major Emmy nominees as well, including the seven shows in the drama series category — Better Call Saul, The Crown, The Handmaid's Tale, House of Cards, Stranger Things, This Is Us and Westworld — only one is broadcast by a major network; four are streaming. In fact, Netflix is coming in second only to HBO (110) with 91 nominations. This month, Post not only offers a glimpse at some of this year's Emmy contenders (see page 14), but we're also featuring the first of our two-part coverage of Web series. Beginning on page 30, Jennifer Walden looks at the unique challenges of sound editors and mixers delivering audio for these shows. Walden speaks with the pros behind such hits as The Crown and GLOW, as well as Lost in Oz and Alias Grace. Next month, I'll share some of my conversations with directors, colorists, editors and post supervisors behind Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale, Netflix's GLOW and more. Of note, The Crown, which graces our cover this month, received 13 Emmy nomina- tions. We won't know until September 17th if it will be the night's big winner, but the nominations are impressive regardless. All Hail the Queen!
