www.postmagazine.com 2 POST MAY 2017 EDITOR'S NOTE e wrap this issue having just returned from the annual National Association of Broadcasters convention in Las Vegas, where there was no shortage of new prod- uct announcements. Post spent nearly a week in Sin City, meeting with many of the industry's top manufacturers and learning about their latest releases. You can view what we feel were highlights from this year's show by checking out our "Post Picks" on page 13, and by reading our "NAB Rewind" feature, which begins on page 18. You can also view inter- views from our Post TV shoot on our Website, where reps from Avid, Blackmagic, Autodesk and others, sat down with the editors to discuss their latest advancements. There's lots of bonus content on postmagazine.com that I'd like to call attention to. First up, Sound Lounge sound designer/partner/CEO Marshall Grupp discusses his work on Ford's popular F-150 campaign, featuring the humorous VO of Dennis Leary. Grupp's sound design reinforces the campaign's quick cuts and humor while also helping to promote the power of the F-150 line. Also online, VFX associate producer Adam Chazen talks about his six years of work on HBO's Game of Thrones. Chazen assists with organizing previs and concept work, as well as helps run and manage the series' VFX database, while also scheduling reviews. He provides insight into how Cospective's CineSync tool connects the show's massive team. Linda Romanello looks at the last episode of CBS's Hawaii Five-O, talking with senior VFX supervisor Adam Avitabile. The finale features 200 effects shots, and Avitabile was on-set for many of them, including several large greenscreen shoots. And in a career profile, DP Anup Kulkarni talks about his work on docs, dramas, thrillers and art features. "Frames, colors and lights," says Kulkarni are "not just my passion or hobbies, but the very parameters through which I perceive life and all the creativity that it encompasses." always hear talk about "dust settling" after major industry events, such as the 2017 NAB Show, which took place last month in Las Vegas. With 1,800-plus exhibitors, we try to meet with as many manufacturers and studio cre- atives as possible. We not only conduct on-camera interviews for Post TV (visit postmagazine. com) and for our daily show newsletter, but we also walk the floor, looking for innovative new products, technologies and solutions for our "Post Picks" awards (page 13) and post-show re- port on page 18. With that said, NAB doesn't end when the show floor closes. Once we return home, it's only then that we begin to dig in and review. Of particular interest, this year, were some newer faces at the show. Broadway Video, a New York City-based entertainment and media company, was a first-time exhibitor situated next to Source Digital, a technology product and service pro- vider specializing in monetization strategies around digital content. The two created an open space environment between their booths to demonstrate how Source Digital's SourceSync.io technology integrated with Broadway Video's Digital 1 platform, showing the consumer bene- fits on the Source side and Broadway showing the benefits for content creators and brands. Sean Safreed (of Red Giant fame), co-founder and CMO of his new company, Pixvana (see their VR column, page 34), exhibited for the first time at the Akamai booth to announce a partnership with Akamai to deliver enhanced virtual reality video experiences through Pixvana's SPIN Studio VR content creation and delivery platform. Digital Glue was exhibiting for the time, inside tech partner Silverdraft's booth. Firefly Cinema, also a first-time exhibitor, was recognized with a "Post Picks" Honorable Mention. Based in Paris, Firefly is now making inroads into the US market and introduced Version 6 of its comprehensive color grading software suite, which includes FirePlay (for playback), FireDay (for digital dailies) and FirePost (for color finishing). While it's always good to see the veteran companies returning to the show, it's also refreshing to see what's new and emerging in the post market. Cheers to another success- ful NAB!
