Among the new developments being touted is The Banks, an expansive new downtown entertainment district situated between the Reds and Bengals stadiums along the banks of the Ohio River, and just south of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. The $600 million-plus develop- ment includes retailers, restaurants, and a new 170-room AC Marriott Hotel, slated for a 2017 opening. The Duke Energy Convention Center recently underwent a $135 million expansion and renovation to become the Midwest's best-in-class center. The expansion means Cincinnati can accommodate 75 percent of the existing con- vention, conference and meetings market in the United States. The facility features 750,000 gross sq. ft., including 200,000 contiguous sq. ft. of exhibit space, a 40,000-sq. ft. Grand ball- room, a second 17,400-sq. ft., ballroom for smaller groups, and 30 meeting rooms. The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center is not only a place to learn about American History and be inspired, it's a neat off site meeting venue for that special reception, workshop or other small event. With 6,816 sq. ft. of meeting space, it can accommodate banquets and theater-style seating for up to 300, and classroom-style seating for as many as 80.
