98  /  the tasting panel  /  july 2015 I f you've ever visited THE TASTING PANEL offices, you've been greeted by excited jumping, enthusiastic licking and some intense tail-wagging. Our office humans may not be the ones nuzzling you with warm noses, but our office dogs sure will. So when Chateau La Paws landed on our desks, we couldn't help but ooh and aaah over the cute faces smiling back at us from the label: We're dog lovers and proud of it. But Chateau La Paws is more than a "critter label" or cutesy Millennial marketing gimmick: The brand, which is owned and marketed by Diageo Chateau & Estates, supports the North Shore Animal League America (NSALA), the world's largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organiza- tion. With over $100,000 so far going toward protecting these animals and helping them find their forever homes, Chateau La Paws is wine with a heart and for a good cause. "I grew up in the country and have firsthand experience with the love and loyalty that a canine can offer his or her human companion," explains Winemaker Marty Spate, "and what better way to educate the public and pose to them the wonder of the doggy world than with a shareable item like a bottle of wine?" "Chateau La Paws is making pet adoption an issue for thought when it otherwise would not be, like shopping for wines, consuming wine in social gatherings, etcetera," explains Kathleen Lynn, Director of Communications for the NSALA. "Featuring actual shelter dogs on the labels underscores the importance of pet adoption. In a world of virtual experiences and interactions, these labels put forth real dogs in need of real people to bring them into their homes." Offered in Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and a Red Blend, each Chateau La Paws label features a photo of an NSALA dog; of the 12 featured on the bottles, 11 have been adopted. "Chateau La Paws represents a varied mix of breeds and ages," comments Spate, "reflective of the expansive selection of loveable pets available across the country. We worked closely with NSALA to identify each dog photographed to highlight the variety of loyal friends we could help with this mission." America's Finest If you picture Marilyn Monroe shimmying and Bing Crosby crooning when you hear "USO," think again: Today's USO, the organization dedi- cated to providing programs, services and entertainment to U.S. troops and their families, is a modern and dynamic group providing services at more than 160 USO locations worldwide. And now, you can support this worthy cause, thanks to The Great DIAGEO CHATEAU & ESTATES' GREAT AMERICAN WINE COMPANY AND CHATEAU LA PAWS OFFER WINES FOR GOOD. Senior Associate Editor Emily Coleman's dog, Lango, explores the CLP range. PHOTO: SHANNON KELLER VP/ Managing Editor Rachel Burkons tasted through the Chateau La Paws range with her pup, Izzy. Here's what Rachel and Izzy had to say about these tail-wagging wines: Rachel says: Chateau La Paws Red Blend is a friendly mixed-breed sipper, with bright acidity and fresh red fruit. Izzy says: Better than a freshly chewed stick, eaten in the grass with a side of mom's favorite shoe. Rachel says: Chateau La Paws Pinot Noir is light and silkier than a puppy's ear, with soft cherry/berry notes mingled with a touch of mocha. Izzy says: Barkingly delicious; smells as good as the pies mom never lets me eat. Rachel says: Chateau La Paws Chardonnay is rich and deep with bright tropical- ity, caramelized pineapple, and a touch of baking spices, mellowed by good acidity and a hint of lemon zest. Izzy says: As refreshing as a drive down the beach with your head out the window. Tongue-out tasty! Please note Izzy's tasting note for the wine are for editorial purposes only – Chateau La Paws wines shouldn't be shared with your four-legged friend. PHOTO: DUSTIN DOWNING Tasting Notes
