RITTWAGE President / CEO NAB 2015: WHAT WE KNOW THE ROAD TO NAB ost wrapped up production on this issue just in time for the annual Na- tional Association of Broadcasters (NAB) convention in Las Vegas. March and April are busy months for the tech side of the post production industry, with manufactur- ers gearing up with new releases that will debut at the show — or slightly before it. We've been fortunate to get a heads up on a number of new products that will appear at NAB this year, and judging from what we've heard, 4K will be the theme. (There's always a "theme," right?) Red will be showing Weapon, the latest camera to incorporate its 19 megapixel Dragon sensor. The company will also highlight customizable broadcast solutions that are capable of offering a live 4K signal while capturing 6K R3D masters. Sony's new PMW-PZ1 is a cost-effective playback and storage solution for 4K/HD shooting and post production applications. As a multi-format player, the PZ1 supports 4K (24p to 60p) and HD video. In the field, the unit allows productions to quickly and easily review material and even output to a professional monitor or consumer TV via HDMI. Canon will preview its new C300 Mark II at NAB, which the company says rep- resents a dramatic departure from its existing camera line. The new Mark II, which is expected to ship in the fall, captures 4K imagery by recording internally to fast memory cards. It is also capable of captur- ing 2K, and can simultaneously record HD. And Ikegami will show both 4K produc- tion and display technology, as well as host an 8K technology exhibit, highlighting some of the newest developments in the extreme- ly high resolution format, Super Hi Vision. Post will be at the show, covering all the latest news, so visit postmagazine.com for daily updates. very year at the start of April, there's a general buzz in the air that I can feel all the way in New York — roughly 2,248 miles miles away from Las Vegas (if you ask JetBlue for the shortest flight distance, anyway). It's in anticipation of our industry's biggest event — NAB — and what new announcements, products and technologies will be revealed at the upcom- ing show. While NAB may have started out as a "broadcasting" show, it has certainly changed over the years. Sure, we're still talking about delivery, distribution, ENG cameras and 4K (which dominated last year's show floor and is still a big topic for both broadcast and post), and this year won't be any different, but NAB has grown considerably and has expanded beyond broadcast, today offering much to the post production community. Anyone from our community who has attended an NAB is already quite familiar with the Las Vegas Convention Center's South Hall, typically filled with vendors offering everything from editing systems, VFX software and plug-ins to compositing tools, rendering solutions, audio and more. Post has already reported on some of this year's big news from Avid (Pro Tools 12), Sony (the new PMW-PZ1 4K/HD playback/ storage solution), Maxon (Cinema 4D Re- lease 16) Forbidden Technologies (the new version of Forscene), Blackmagic (Teranex 3.2 update) and Boris FX and Imagineer, announcing the newest versions of their flagship products — Boris Continuum Com- plete and Mocha Pro Planar Tracking tools — as a result of an earlier announced strate- gic merger between the two companies. NAB also continues to offer its Post Production World — touted as the "world's leading training event for digital media professionals, including editors, producers, directors, graphic artists, motion graphics designers, and new media specialists" that offers courses, workshops, sessions and more on editing, animation, VFX, 3D and the like. As a woman in this industry, I also feel compelled to point out a special session, "Working Together To Close The Gender Gap in Post Production," featuring several working female editors discussing relevant topics. As always, Post will be reporting daily from the show floor with Post TV, adding news to our Website, www.postmagazine. com, and in three consecutive NAB-specific e-newsletters. Also, we'll wrap up coverage with our May issue, where we'll announce our annual Post Picks from NAB. For those of you attending this year's show, and for those of you who are not, we're here to help you find what you're looking for.
