From the Editor F all has come much too soon this year. It seems we haven’t had very much of a summer at all. I’ve had reports of warm days in our valleys, but cool ocean breezes and morning fog seemed more like June than September. Probably due to the uncertain econ- omy, this summer we had more than enough visitors to keep attractions and tour companies happy. U.S. and visitors from many lands kept the Walk of Fame filled with people. And what a draw it is! As a “local” I sometimes forget how important it has been as Hollywood has evolved over the years. In 1994, to counteract rumors that Hollywood had burned down during the civil unrest, I was assigned to give tours to various TV re- porters who converged on L.A. to get the real story. We’d walk a stretch of the Walk of Fame and seeing their excitement when they came to one of their favorite stars gave me an entirely new appre- ciation of the Walk’s impact. With this issue we commemorate in the 50th Anniversary Celebration. James Bartlett provides the background of how it all came into being over fifty years ago. Hollywood is constantly evolving. We moved from a sleepy farming community, to the silent movies, then the talkies, color, widescreen, 3-D and from film to digital hardly missing a step. The recent impact technology has had on the recording industry has been a bit more dramatic. Darryl Morden’s article on the current state of the industry takes us from Capitol Records’ famed Studio A to the fate of smaller lesser know recording studios who nonethe- less made a mark on Hollywood. For a year round activity that is more an experience than a race, each weekend the Amazing LA Race begins in Hollywood and takes you on a merry chase to discover hidden clues and see Los Angeles as never before. My assistant, Charlotte and I joined three other teams on a recent Saturday. I’m a native Angeleno and Charlotte is from France—we both enjoyed deciphering clues and getting up close and personal with Hollywood and L.A. landmarks. I hope you enjoy read- ing about our adventure as much as we did “racing” about. Finally, Oscar and I were recently honored, along with the Holly- wood Walk of Fame, by the Travel and Tourism Marketing Associa- tion for our work on behalf of cultural tourism and promoting the unique culture and lore of Hollywood. It’s been an amazing ride and the journey continues. Life is a trip and so is Hollywood.
