The action revolves around a spoiled daughter of a rich American family (June Allyson) and the Austrian vagrant she hires as a butler (David Niven). The butler is in-fact, highborn and comedy and romance ensue. The film is credited to two Art Directors. Alexander Golitzen and Richard H. Riedel, both highly accomplished designers with a long history at Universal, where this film was made. Golitzen was inducted into the ADG Hall of Fame in 2011. Born in Russia and related to the tsars, he fled to America as a youth and studied architecture at the University of Washington. Like many architects during the depression, he found opportunity in Hollywood, and went on to lead the Art Department at Universal from 1954 to 1973. Among his many design credits are Spartacus, Foreign Correspondent, Touch of Evil and Phantom of the Opera (1943). Riedel's best-known work was Pillow Talk (1959), and he worked primarily on comedies and romances, with a string of Abbott and Costello films and the introduction of Frances the talking mule on his credit list. He worked at Universal from 1937 to 1960, when he died in a car crash while in preproduction on a film in Italy. A. INTERIOR OF A LIBRARY FROM MY MAN GODFREY (1957).
