52 • THE ARTISAN SUMMER 2025 OVERCOMING CHALLENGES & Staying True to History One of the challenges we faced was ensuring that the hair styling choices fit seamlessly into the visual storytelling of the series. While some characters leaned into the era's contemporary trends, others adhered strictly to tradition. Finding that balance without compromising authenticity required a meticulous approach. Another challenge was sourcing appropriate hair accessories and styling materials that aligned with historical accuracy. Many modern products do not reflect the natural ingredients and handmade elements traditionally used by Native communities. We worked to incorporate as many authentic elements as possible, relying on guidance from our cultural advisors to select materials that honored tradition while collaborating with our costume designer, Lahly Poore Ericson. THE POWER OF HAIR in Visual Storytelling The final look seamlessly blended 1970s fashion with Navajo heritage, showing how hair can connect cultures, eras, and identities. This project reinforced our responsibility as stylists to tell historical stories with care and collaboration. By honoring tradition and working with cultural experts, we helped create an authentic visual narrative that reflects both personal and collective pride. We ensure that every detail, down to the last strand of hair, is a true reflection of the stories we seek to tell. • Team: Krista Perry, Melissa Yonkey, Grace Esquibel, Elicia Vazquez Make-up designs by the late Taylor Roberts Kiowa Gordon and Zahn McClarnon (Joe Leaphorn) Deanna Allison (Emma Leaphorn) Natalie Benally (Natalie Bluehouse) Betty Ann Tsosie (Margaret Cigaret) and Zahn McClarnon
