20 • THE ARTISAN SUMMER 2025 THE RESIDENCE B Y T H E M A K E - U P T E A M M A K I N G U P & S T Y L I N G F or The Residence, we handled make-up for 83 actors that represented a wide range of ethnicities and roles within the White House. Authenticity was our focus on designing each character. We collaborated very closely with our creator/writer Paul William Davies, costume designer Lyn Paolo, directors Liza Johnson and Jaffar Mahmood, hair HOD Edward Morrison and Betsy Beers, our executive producer. Each actor and extra was discussed in detail from cooks to cleaning staff, communication aids, service advisors to the social secretary. Several adjustments had to be made depending on which set we were filming on. The red room, the green room, and the blue room all had their challenges of color tones on the skin. Cindy Williams did make-up on Susan Kelechi Watson who plays Jasmine Haney, creating a polished beauty make-up giving the appearance of flawless beautiful skin and keeping the look conservative to align with the White House and giving her cheeks and lips a little pop of color. Cindy also did Molly Griggs who plays Lilly Schumacher, an influential character. Giving her an effortlessly glamorous style using matte textures, winged eyeliner and a bold lip—striking but not heavy- handed make-up. ALL PHOTOS COURTESY OF NETFLIX Janice Kinjo designed the make-up for Uzo Aduba who stars as Cordelia Cupp. Her look was bold yet refined and unfussy. She had to add orange tones to certain sets to bring out color in her cheeks and lips and adjust foundation accordingly. Amy Schmiederer designed the make-up look for Edwina Findley who plays Sheila Cannon to give her a classic polished look with a little edge pushing the White House make-up rules. Her nails were always well manicured with a strong lip and lashes. She kept her foundation warm with added luminous finish to maintain radiance in the varied lighting. Amy also designed the grooming for Bronson Pinchot who plays Didier Gotthard to give him a specific mustache. Enhancing his eyes with a taupe liner on the waterline to add subtle definition. Giving him a light tan. Liz Villamarin designed make-up for Isiah Whitlock Jr. who plays Larry Dokes. Undertones were laid down first, then skin tones were matched on top. Character tattoos were designed to reflect his chief background. Overall, make-up was light and natural with subtle contouring. Liz also designed make-up for Giancarlo Esposito who plays A.B.
