At that gathering, Deby laid eyes on a photograph of Mark on the wall and couldn't help but inquire about the man in the picture. Little did she know that this simple moment of curiosity would set the stage for a beautiful connection. Noticing Deby's interest, Mark's father wasted no time in playing matchmaker. He urged Mark to "come over right away." Mark recalled his father's description of Deby as a "Brazilian supermodel." In the end, the prospect of a delightful evening with wine and barbecue seemed enticing, so Mark agreed to come over. Mark recounts, "After struggling through a conversation, we exchanged numbers." Three months later, out of the blue, Mark received a call from Deby. She asked him a straightforward question: "Remember me?" Mark, trying to maintain his composure, responded nonchalantly with, "Oh, yeah." This seemingly casual reconnection led to a series of dates that unveiled an undeniable connection and chemistry. Despite the language barrier, with Deby's English still developing, and Mark's Portuguese being nonexistent, their bond flourished. Mark took it upon himself to help her with English, which became an endearing and cherished aspect of their relationship. Deby's linguistic journey even led her to adopt a subtle New York accent (despite having never been there at the time), adding an intriguing layer to her identity. Within six months of their initial meeting, Mark and Deby were engaged, marking a significant milestone in both of their lives. It was clear that he had found his life partner. An even longer relationship in his life is with the Motion Picture Sound Editors. Joining the MPSE was fueled by a deep admiration for the organization and a desire to be part of a community that celebrated the top editors in the world. The moment he met the qualifications for membership, he eagerly applied, gathering endorsements from prominent figures in the industry, including Tom McCarthy and Rick Hinson. This marked the beginning of his proud association with MPSE. Displaying the MPSE initials on his office door and credits were a symbol of his dedication to the craft and his place in a community that shared his passion for sound editing. As his involvement with the MPSE continued to grow, Mark embarked on a path that eventually led him to serve on the Board. In his early years on the Board, he absorbed knowledge from seasoned individuals like Suhail Kafity, Rick Hinson, Hudson Miller, Ethel Crutcher, and Warren Hamilton, gaining insights into the workings of the organization. Mark's journey through various roles, including secretary and treasurer, allowed him to contribute his skills and dedication to the MPSE's mission. A notable aspect of the MPSE during those days was the annual picnic, which provided a unique opportunity for members to interact in a more relaxed setting. It allowed Mark to connect with his idols and fellow members, fostering a sense of camaraderie that he cherished. However, as financial constraints took hold, the picnic was discontinued for more than two decades, leaving Mark with a longing to revive it. Mark's journey continued as he moved up the ranks, eventually becoming Vice President. As the organization underwent transitions, he felt the need to contribute more significantly. Encouraged by his peers, including Tom McCarthy and Frank Morrone and a heavy nudge from his wife Deby, Mark accepted the role of MPSE President. Under Mark's presidency, the MPSE picnic is now back! Despite challenges and changes in the industry, Mark focused on advancing the organization and ensuring its legacy. Under Mark's leadership, the MPSE faced numerous challenges, including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the double strike of 2023. To safeguard the organization's future, Mark and the Board of Directors implemented measures such as virtual events and waiving membership dues for a year. Mark has been instrumental in pushing the need for the inclusion of professionals in sound editing that have previously not been heavily associated with the MPSE, specifically, the gaming sector. Under his leadership, the MPSE international membership has Deby & Mark
