All of the exterior scenes took place at night, a boon for letting the bad bits fall off into darkness, but the bonus fire escape on the bar caught the light from the corner streetlight. My friend Rena DeAngelo had recently decorated the remake of West Side Story, so we rented the fantastic drug store counters and cabinets she'd found for Doc's, fashioned them into a bar back and built the actual bar to match. We designed the interior with deep rounded corners to evoke a space comfortable to mariners, and layered old photos of the ships, sailors and longshoremen to support the history of the place, as well as its current place in the history of Bayard's story. The overall approach to the design of the film was to provide the lived-in, real, uneventful environments in which the monumental events of history were planned and played out. These meetings took place in a variety of offices, and the production wanted each to have its own color, tone and character. We layered the faded yellow and gold march headquarters with the drinking fountains and children's coat hooks of former classrooms. The top third floor was rendered by the scenics to be F.
