reveal that a particular reference is not as useful as anticipated. Or perhaps it is valid, and others are not. Nevertheless, this is all part of the creative process that contributes to the development of quality images for film in the creation of art. Included in the images is the exterior design for the Circle Q, a liquor store where Kamala's best friend Bruno works. It also serves as her unofficial headquarters as Ms. Marvel often uses this space too. Christopher and I went through over thirty variations of the space. We used a lot of inspiration from bodegas in New York City, which have exotic colors and graphics. We tried different signage, fonts, materials and architectural elements until we were convinced and immersed in the world we wanted to share with audiences. Creating a Teenager's World A big part of Kamala's personal experience is driven by her identity as a teenager, a young person with complicated social landscapes, friendships and the pressures of academic challenges. Having compassion for the character was essential to understanding her. This meant including themes of self-discovery, personal growth and empowerment that are characteristic of this age group, while keeping in mind that the character matures as two identities instead of one. She matures as Kamala and Ms. Marvel. With this in mind, the Production Designer decided to also have me start creating the interior of our main heroine, Kamala Khan. We worked arduously on this identity, exploring many directions. We would frequently change elements until each element felt right. Ultimately, this was an inner world for Kamala to seek refuge from the drama she experienced in the outer world. We wanted to support the story, so the audiences felt like they knew and understood Kamala. This was reflected in the external spaces Kamala moved in. Each element was painstakingly selected and implemented. The blue paint on the walls, for instance, had ties to Kamala's culture and family. The clothes dropped on the floor tell the story of how messy being a teenager can sometimes be. The stickers and posters on the walls showcase its inhabitant's many heroes, passions and past. A.
