After the main builds were complete, we transformed the mill into the Tarkington scenery dock, where Adrian Brody— Asteroid City's director—lives. One of the great joys working on films with Wes is the close-knit team, many of whom have been together on numerous projects over the years. Erica Dorn and Lucile Gauvain developed all the graphics for the film—including the cowboy wallpaper patterns and menu façade of the luncheonette. Kris Moran, longtime collaborator with Wes, was back again as set decorator. She chased down amazing pieces of Western ephemera for each of the sets and worked hand-in-hand with prop master Sandy Hamilton, who's made more films with Wes than I have. Sandy had some amazing pieces on this one between the kids' science projects and helping picture vehicles source each of the vintage station wagons. Stefano Ortolani worked with Wes on Life Aquatic and Stéphane Cressend was the Art Director on The French Dispatch. There were new folks as well. Greensman David Carr was new to the team. He brought in palms and cactus from all around Spain for the motel garden. It took a great deal of water to keep the garden healthy as the plants were freshly planted and hadn't rooted in. And of course, new for this project were José Altit and the Spanish construction team, as well as our sculptors from Spain, France and Italy It was truly an honor and an incredible joy making Asteroid City with all of them.
