There is a symbolic transference of inner strength through color, starting very small with Shug putting red lipstick on Celie before the opening night at the Juke Joint. In the final act, when Celie has discovered her voice, she inherits the old general store and transforms it into Miss Celie's Fancy Pants shop. Painted with a historic dusty rose, the final grand dance number of the film takes place here, and she is wearing the brightest shade of red fancy pants. The Color Purple is a cornerstone of Black American culture, so I felt the responsibility to capture the emotional power of this film. It's about redemption, finding yourself, being seen, all driven by strong women. As Oprah says, "This ain't your mama's Color Purple— but your mama's gonna love it, too." ADG Paul D.
