74 • THE ARTISAN WINTER 2024 which had a new silicone appliance this time around. Peter Tothpal designed the new look for her hair that became long, unkempt, dirty, and dreaded out. He used various clay products to give her wig a gritty appearance. Adam Warlock is a new addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Make-up artists Alexei Dmitriew and LuAndra Whitehurst, along with hair designers Cassie Russek and Stephanie Fenner, worked together to developed this look. A gold paint using a silicone base, gold creams, and airbrush paints were used to achieve his make-up. A hand-painted balayage technique was used to give dimension, blending the gold make-up into his scalp. For Warlock's "burnt look," a thick rubber dust was created using gel and a spray made of charcoal dirt and hairspray. Finally, the enigmatic Mantis, portrayed by Pom Klementieff, received some subtle yet impactful updates. Her make-up, applied by Michael Ornelaz, featured a lower profile appliance on her forehead. e eye make-up was refined, and her eyelashes were handmade using ostrich feathers. A new wig was created by Legacy and applied by Sean Smith, mirroring Mantis' signature layered hair style. Her hair color gained an opalescent glow using Redken Shades EQ, giving her highlights a pearlescent sheen. RECORDER GUARDS AND TECHS eel's make-up by Cale omas and Kevin Kirkpatrick. Vim's make-up by LuAndra Whitehurst and Michelle Miller. Our actors, Miriam and Nico, graciously allowed us to cut their hair in a manner that facilitated the application and seamless blending of appliances for a smooth transition onto their necks. Achieving the final look involved the use of creams and airbrush colors, along with custom stencils. Custom contact lenses were also utilized. Additionally, the Legacy Effects team 3D-printed and painted mechanical elements which were then affixed into the appliances. For the Recorder Guards and Scientists, involving more than 50 individuals who performed stunts and appeared in the background, each of them received "tech" prosthetics on their temples. e Scientists received similar prosthetics as Vim & eel. ey all sported a consistent bald fade hair style throughout the film's duration. While many of them played multiple roles as background and stunt performers in different scenes, they maintained the bald fade by using wigs To handle the 140 pair of contact lenses throughout the film, Christina Gonzalez led the on-set lens team, while Jessica Nelson of Veiled Optics provided the hero contact lenses. At the beginning and end of the film, we had to create the large crowds that populated the Planet Knowhere. As refugees, our Knowhere citizens are of all alien races, and we wanted to reflect their conditions with hair and make-up—adding dirt, grit and grime to everyone. We had up to 375 background characters plus our stunt and main cast to get ready those days. In addition to our five main trailers, we had a huge sound stage set up to accommodate the 150 hair and make-up artists from both Local 706 and Local 798. We split up background into A, B, and C groups. e "A" group consisted of 30-40 prosthetic make-ups, with teeth and contacts. Most which required either wig wraps, hairpieces, or wigs. e "B" group were the 70-plus specialty looks that had body paint, transfer appliances, and specialty wigs. e "C" group were mainly made up of our human looks with stylized hair and dirt make-up. Our background was coordinated by the huge efforts of Amanda Sprunger, Raissa Patton, and Sandra Linn. In total, we applied 22,542 appliances to a cast of more than 100 actors and more than 1,000 background artists. Additionally, we used nearly 500 wigs and more than 130 facial hairpieces. is monumental effort required seamless coordination between Legacy Effects, hair, make-up, and wardrobe teams.
