THE ARTISAN WINTER 2024 • 69 HUMANIMALS As we approached the latter stages of filming, the Humanimal portion of the project felt like an entirely new movie. is phase introduced unique appliances and distinctive color schemes, setting it apart from the earlier segments of production. Every Humanimal character was painstakingly craed to be distinct yet seamlessly integrated into our dystopian, counter-Earth, half- animal/half-human, 1980s-inspired concept. With 10 principal Humanimals and around 30 background/stunt actors in make- up and hair, meticulous planning from the conception was essential to manage the demanding daily workload. e dedicated team at Legacy Effects delivered exceptional work in fabrication, research and development (R&D), and pre- painting, ensuring our preparedness to move forward. Moreover, deep background characters were equipped with silicone masks, resulting in nearly 70 Humanimal characters needing daily preparation and maintenance, in addition to our Guardians. All of this was made possible through the expertise of more than 110 hair and make-up artists. Make-up appliances included a mix of foam latex and silicone pieces. Some of the most advanced looks, such as the Bat Family, Porcupine, Cassowary, Turtles, and Rabbits incorporated 3D-printed skull caps that used magnets to key in special elements such as eyes, beaks and ears. e main cast and featured background Humanimals wore custom teeth and contact lenses. Each wig was handmade around the molds of the prosthetic, This photo and below: Cassie Russek (right) touching up the Cassowary postal worker. Touchups on set
