THE ARTISAN WINTER 2024 • 51 iterations, it was decided between the three of us that the 'comb over with a side part' was the absolute favorite style for the character. When we began filming, Paul's hair was too short on top to achieve a comb over, so I had a custom top piece made (wig by Luc Verschueren) and luckily, as Paul's hair grew during filming, we were able to switch out and use his own hair which matched perfectly to the established look! To create this classic '70s hair style, I used a Solano blow dryer, Mason Pearson brush, and Tresemme products. Sarah Rubano, costume designer Wendy Chuck, and I were in sync with our ideas from the beginning, and we witnessed firsthand as the amazing Paul Giamatti transformed into professor Hunham. Sarah: My process with Paul started with keeping his skin natural and realistic by using iS Clinical extreme protect sunscreen and Koh Gen Do moisture foundation. His facial hair was measured and kept trimmed, and I added depth of color to his sideburns, eyebrows and mustache by using the lo-lights Bluebird ink palette. Every morning, Paul would sit down in my make-up chair and reach for the fine-tuned mustache comb called the 'Zeus' which I'd leave in the same spot on my station every day. He loved that mini-tortoise shell comb—we often had a chuckle about it, and he ended up using that exact comb for the scene in the film where he's getting ready for the Christmas party! To achieve the look of professor Hunham's eye disorder, I had scleral contact lenses designed and hand-painted by Cristina Patterson. There were 'wall-eyed' lenses made for both his left and right eyes, but we only used one or the other depending on the shot. Alexander's idea behind this was to keep the audience guessing which eye was the 'good eye'—which is also a story point. My on-set lens technician was the very reliable and skilled, Zach Ripps. Dominic Sessa plays 'Angus'—a troublemaker student who is sadly unable to go home for Christmas and described to us as a smartass, brainy kid who forms an unlikely bond with professor Hunham and Mary. Da'Vine Joy Randolph Paul Giamatti and Dominic Sessa Da'Vine Joy Randolph stars as Mary Lamb and Andrew Garman as Dr. Hardy Woodrup
