THE ARTISAN WINTER 2024 • 21 CRAFT EDUCATION Make-Up Craft Meeting On July 20, 2023, Local 706 make-up artists held their second craft meeting for the year. We had a really fantastic group of presenters; fellow 706 make-up artist Camille Calvet with her reusable silicone pads company Silcskin and Vance Hartwell with his companies Holdz-It & Blokz-It. European Body Art was also in attendance discussing the latest products from their brand, as well as Professional Vision Care, Terminal B, and the Detox Market about their new pro networking group, The Clean Collective. In addition, refreshments were generously provided by Dr. Bita Orthodontic Group and Vina Beverages. Camille Calvet is a two-time Emmy-winning make-up artist. She has been in Local 706 for 34 years. She has years of experience on set, as well as in the SPFX labs. In 1999, Camille had the genius idea to develop Silcskin; the original silicone anti-aging wrinkle pad. While shooting Star Trek, she and her actors started to notice when they slept on their sides, they would wake up with chest wrinkles that would last all day and she wanted to create a product that would help prevent this. She also had surgery for thyroid cancer around the same time and the doctors gave her a piece of silicone to help her scar heal and flatten. On the show, they used silicone prosthetics and she always noticed how soft her hands became. This in itself was a miracle considering all the harsh chemicals they were using. This gave her the idea to make a décolleté silicone patch to create a barrier method out of silicone to hold the skin taut while sleeping so the wrinkles were not formed. She created her first décolleté pad out of 100% medical grade silicone, the same type of silicone that was being used to heal scars; only she formulated it much thicker to really hold the skin in place. There are three ways that silicone treats scars and/or wrinkles: 1. It holds the skin taut, which irons out existing wrinkles and prevents new wrinkles from forming. 2. The silicone draws the skin's own moisture to the surface, which plumps up existing wrinkles. 3. It works on muscle memory like the old frownies but without adhesives, fillers, or paper. All her products are made in the USA in Los Angeles allowing her the quality control using a much more expensive platinum-curing process which leaves no byproducts. Most knock-off brands are made in China and have fillers and additives. There are five distinct pads that treat different areas and are simple and reusable to use for up to 30 days. There are décolleté pads, collete pads, eye pads, brow pads, and multi-pads. The line also has a handcream made out of the same silicone technology. He came and taught us about his brands Blokz-It and Holdz-It. They are incredible tools that he created to help make our jobs easier on set. Our Craft President, Claire Doyle, arranged for all members to get discounts from our presenters, and contribute gratis that was raffled off at the end of the meeting. You can find most of the brands at Nigel's, Naimies, Frends, and online. Claire and I try our hardest to highlight our fellow Local 706 members' brands to help educate all our members on their innovative products they create to help us all do our jobs better on set. We also try to bring in fellow make-up artists to not only show us products, but share with us the tips and techniques they have learned working on sets/labs for years. With tons of great brands and products on the market today, we try to keep our members informed on the latest in our field. We had an excellent turnout and would like to thank all our members for the continued support, as well as our fellow artists and all the amazing brands that took the time to show us and educate us on their products.
