80 • THE ARTISAN WINTER 2024 and strategically added touches of gray; the third piece had less hair and grayer giving the appearance of an aging man. Dennis Haysbert/ Clarence Baker: We built two wigs with textured hair. The first we blended darker browns, then clippered into a rounded shape. The second, we blended dark browns, lighter browns incorporating a little gray, then clippered into soft squared shape. Matt Walsh/Lonny Mason: After this light brown wig was fit, we colored it soft strawberry blonde. We redressed it for his second look. Tony Shalhoub/Roger Enrico: For this character, we built a hand-tied custom wig to reproduce Mr. Enrico's likeness. Lora Martinez-Cunningham/Patti (Enrico's secretary): This wig, we pieced together several different wigs. Then tinted it producing an even color. We then cut it, recreating Patty's unique shag hair style. In-between all the hard work, there were a lot of shenanigans and belly laughs. You couldn't set your phone down or you might've had a new wallpaper or screensaver. And while filming, the crew borrowed a wig from me and shot a comedic skit about a wig looking for a job; to be worn by a Hollywood producer, while the soundtrack "Frolic" played. The escapades didn't stop there; one morning, the crew surprised our UPM when he opened his trailer door, balloons poured out. The last day we received a plea, "our director needs a wig." After Flamin' Hot's award-winning premiere at SXSW, and its theatrical release in 2023, it had an unprecedented release being the first scripted feature debuting on both Hulu and Disney+. To date, it is Searchlight's most-watched streaming film of all time. With the close collaboration between hair, make-up, costume, the great camaraderie Eva Longoria and the producers created made this production a memorable one. My team and I are grateful to have been a part of this production, especially one that honors diversity, with the awareness that Latinos are one of the most underrepresented in the film and television industry. This was a project where Spanish was the first language on set; Latinos were prioritized in front of the camera and also working behind it while telling a story of one Mexican-American family, chasing and capturing the American dream. • Tony Shalhoub as Roger Enrico Lora Martinez-Cunningham as Roger Enrico's secretary Patti.
