58 • THE ARTISAN WINTER 2024 To finish, I shape his waves with Days of Dirt by the men's groomer and that's it! For the more polished look you see in episode 10, "The Bear," when we see Carmy in his chef whites, I used paste from the men's groomer, finger-combed back and set the style with a diffuser. I have a less-is-more approach when doing men's hair; I can always add more product, but it's hard to take it out! I love working with Ayo Edebiri; she's got great ideas about Sydney's hair and a great personal style. This season, we changed her braids from the ombre from Season 1 to a deep brown with a peek-a-boo of blonde underneath. I custom-colored all of the blonde to get the perfect beige ash blonde we wanted, and I was so stoked on the way they came out. I knew we would see a lot more of Sydney's hair out in the world this season, and Melanie did a great job of doing new looks this year—we try to keep things really simple, but cool. She did a lot of half-up buns and ponytails, double buns, and I bought her a ton of scrunchies! We love a scrunchie. Abby Elliott who plays Sugar is a dream to work with; I feel guilty even calling it work, we have so much fun. We had decided Season 1 that Sugar is somebody that does her hair every day. It was important to see a shift in her look as she committed to working at the restaurant from her old job; in episode four, you'll see that we softened her hair using her natural texture and went for more of a beach wave instead of a blowout. I maintained Sugar's waves with a .1.25 GHD iron Oaui air dry foam and texturizing spray, finishing with Bumble and bumble Brilliantine. I really wanted her to have a moment at the restaurant opening, so when I talked to Abby and Chis about a Brigitte Bardot/Goldie Hawn-inspired updo, everyone was into it and I just loved her look. John Bivens barbered Ebraheim (Edwin Lee Gibson) and Marcus (Lionel Boyce) throughout the season, and Angela maintained Cousin Richie, played by Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Tina played by Liza Colón-Zayas. Everything is happening over a condensed period of time so it's imperative for continuity that everybody's on a schedule. Getting into the guest stars, we had a ton of fun with everyone! Will Poulter as chef Luca, we were on the same page from the beginning, really giving him a look that no one has seen him with before: tight-shaved sides piecey with volume on top. Molly Gordon was so fun, Chris and Josh asked me if I could do a homage to Star Wars and I love hiding little Easter eggs in the show, so when you see her in the hospital on the phone, she has low braided buns as my modern reference to princess Leia! Chef Terry (Olivia Colman) was a dream. I kept her natural using Tecuane and Malin & Goetz sage lotion. For episode six, "Fishes," it was a flashback episode with incredible guest stars, so I wanted to make sure that it was special and that everyone had the perfect individual look for their character. We had some limitations as we were shooting a flashback episode in the middle of the season, so I couldn't do any drastic cutting. For Jeremy, I skipped a haircut that week and used the Leonor Greyl mousse to define his curls. We colored Abby's hair a warm brown for that week (yes, I said we had her hair colored for one week). Thank you to Abby for letting us color her hair for a week, and to Demi at Spoke & Weal for working with me to get her the exact color and getting her back to blonde and keeping her hair healthy by Monday for a continuous match pickup shot! It was so exciting to hear that Jamie Lee Curtis was going to be playing Donna; Chris had shown a inspo photo of Monica Vitti and it was exactly how I had a pictured Donna. I put together Jeremy Allen White and Molly Gordon as Claire L-R: Ricky Staffieri as Ted Fak and Bob Odenkirk as Uncle Lee L-R: Gillian Jacobs as Tiffany and Abby Elliott
