www.postmagazine.com 2 POST JAN/FEB 2023 EDITOR'S NOTE his issue ar- rives at the height of awards season, with the Advanced Imaging Society's Lumiere Awards taking place as I write this. The Lumiere Awards recognize work in motion pic- tures, episodic and new media content, and immersive au- dio. This year, they are also honoring director/producer Damien Chazelle with their Gene Kelly Visionary Award at the event in Beverly Hills. The Motion Picture Sound Editors will present their 70th Annual Golden Reel Awards on February 26 th in Los Angeles, honoring many of the industry's most talented sound artists and their contributions to outstanding feature film, television, animation, computer enter- tainment and student productions. Tom Cruise will be on hand to present Jerry Bruckheimer with the MPSE Filmmaker Award, while Gwendolyn Yates Whittle, MPSE, will be honored with the MPSE's Career Achievement Award. American Cinema Editors will present their 73rd Annual ACE Eddie Awards on March 5 th at UCLA's Royce Hall, recognizing outstanding editing in 14 categories of film, television and documentaries. The ACE Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award will be presented to Gina Prince-Bythewood for her exemplary body of work, including her latest film, The Woman King. Film editors Lynne Willingham, ACE, and Don Zimmerman, ACE, will also be honored for career achievements. And of course, the 95th Academy Awards are set to take place on March 12th in Hollywood. Everything Everywhere All at Once leads all nominations with 11, with All Quiet on the Western Front and The Banshees of Inisherin not far behind with nine nominations each. On page 18, Iain Blair reports on many of the contenders leading the production and post production categories, and on page 26, I connect with some of the below-the-line talent that helped make Netflix's All Quiet on the Western Front such a powerful film about Germany losing World War I. Post also takes a look at five Oscar-qualifying shorts — three of which made the final list of nominees — talking to the filmmakers who used the format to tell equal- ly-compelling stories. You can check them out, beginning on page 24. Beyond this year's awards season, Post is also closely watching the 'virtual production' space, and we're anticipating more news on the horizon, with the annual NAB show set to take place in April. On pages 11 and 12, you can learn more about businesses that are using LED volumes and realtime rendering to give clients unlimited creative options during produc- tion, while reducing the time for post production. Benefits also include a reduced need to travel, thereby lowering budgets and the project's carbon footprint. We further look at 'workflow' improvements with our column on page 32, where the team from Goodbye Kansas Studios share their experience with Universal Scene Description. CG supervisor Alexis Andersson and pipeline technical director Dan Englesson explain how their adoption of USD has greatly improved their production pipeline. Looking online, I invite you to check out Post's latest podcast with first-time director Nicolas Harvard, who recently wrapped up work on The Locksmith, starring Ryan Phillippe, Kate Bosworth and Ving Rhames. Harvard is an accomplished cinematographer who took on additional duties for this project, which shot entirely in New Mexico. He shares insight into the filmmaking process and what he learned directing his first feature.
