As most Art Department folk know, sometimes you have to get scrappy and think of hacks to save money. We couldn't afford to build and scenic period kitchen cabinets, so we scoured Craigslist until we randomly found someone in Van Nuys selling a full kitchen pulled from a building being demolished. Unfortunately, we had to make a deal to take everything from the property and sort it later, which wouldn't have been so bad if it wasn't all stored in his basement. The film's industrious Art Director Jack Carnevale did some serious calculating to reconfigure the multitude of pieces into a coherent and amazing addition to Al's kitchen. The Art Department made sure that this set included obscure hints to Al's history that maybe everyone didn't know, like his Cal Poly alma mater or his skill at architecture. The set also included Easter eggs for Al's UHF fans, such as a magnet from Spatula City and a menu from Big Edna's Burgers on the refrigerator. A. AL'S APARTMENT. SET PHOTO. B. AL'S APARTMENT.
