She has always considered herself something of an anthropologist, studying every aspect of the characters' lives. Her guiding principle is that a film must be grounded in humanity. She believes the hallmark of a good design is for it to go unnoticed. "If the characters seem at home on the set, and you feel comfortable watching them there, then I've done my job." Balancing her family with a very demanding career was essential while her two children were growing, and Lilly limited herself to one film per year to allow time with them, and insisted on being at the family dinner table at six-thirty every night. Lilly credits her success to hiring the most gifted people and then listening to them, and has worked with the same brilliant crew for over fifteen years, building a wonderful family of fellow artists. She admits to being demanding and outspoken, but recognizes the importance of cooperation. "It's important for me to get my way, but it's more important for me to be happy. I can't be happy if I know that I'm making the people working for me miserable." She finds the job a pleasure, having traveled all over the world and scouted amazing places, she states, "I feel very blessed to have found the perfect job for me." C. LEGENDS OF THE FALL.
