She attended Bard College in New York, where she studied art, physics and photography, areas which proved to be incredibly useful in her later film career. Lilly began her career as a photographer, and her interest in set design was sparked while building sets for magazine shoots. Seeking to hone her design skills, she attended the Lester Polakov School for Theater Arts to learn drafting and rendering. Her early mentor was the great Mel Bourne. He had an Art Director he wasn't pleased with and offered her the job. She found all the locations on Woody Allen's Manhattan. When she was offered her first Production Design job by producer Mike Hausman, Mel said "TAKE IT! You are ready, a natural." The film Alambrista, directed by Robert Young, paid nothing but taught her so much. She not only designed the sets, but was also in charge of wardrobe, makeup, set painting and special effects makeup. After that experience, she was hired on film after film, and her salary thankfully went up. Lilly's many films on which she was the Production Designer include To Live and Die in L.A, In the Line of Fire, Legends of the Fall (Oscar nomination), Strange Days, The American President, The Crucible, City of Angels, The Pink Panther, The Last Samurai (Oscar and ADG Award nomination) and the TV series Marco Polo.
