Fall 2022

We gave summer a grand send-off with the 9th Annual LMGI Awards gala on August
27 and we head into fall energized and with renewed purpose. Production continues to
boom and studios and cinephiles everywhere are flocking to fall film festivals which are
launching pads to 2023 Oscar glory. Fall also brings us the 2022 Emmys, for which many
LMGI members were able to cast their vote as new members of the Academy. If you work
in television, consider joining—as our membership grows in size so does our Academy
influence.
In our cover story, "Mud, Sweat and Tears: The Making of The Essex Serpent," Jared
Cowan takes us into the evocative, ever-changing "water world" of the saltmarsh, an
integral character in the limited series where the possible existence of a mythic beast
pits science against superstition. Cowan examines the unique challenges faced by
SLM Harriet Lawrence and her team in bringing a major production into this dramatic
landscape where time, tides and the elements hold sway. In "The Power of Place," Diane
Friedman breaks down the LMGI Awards show—from the red carpet to the after party.
After the two-year COVID hiatus, nominees, honorees, members, presenters, sponsors
and friends finally gathered in style to celebrate excellence on location worldwide.
Our columns include "In My City" with William Garvey, who gives us an insider's look
at Ohio's film-friendly "Forest City" of Cleveland. "In the News" reports on the LMGI's
first post-COVID in-person return to Comic-Con and our presence at the Cannes Film
Festival.
And in our "Martini Shot," Dow Griffith gives us a graphic look at the Centro Comercial
Torre in Seville, Spain.
The LMGI Compass is also delighted to announce that this issue marks the welcome
addition of Edward Mazurek and Dodd Vickers to our editorial staff. Their energy and
enthusiasm will be a tremendous asset as we strive to continue to deliver a quality
magazine that celebrates our members' creative accomplishments and professional
areas of interest.
Until next time,
Stevie Nelson, Diane Friedman, Paul Messana, Edward Mazurek, Dodd Vickers
