www.postmagazine.com 2 POST JULY/AUG 2022 EDITOR'S NOTE e're excited to bring you coverage of many of this summer's biggest feature films! I had a chance to speak with director Joseph Kosinski just prior to Top Gun: Maverick being released. The film, starring Tom Cruise, has since gone on to gross more than $660M domesti- cally and spawned a companion music video for the Lady Gaga track "Hold My Hand," which serves as an important part of the feature's soundtrack. Kosinski directed the music video — his first — in addition to the film, and took time to share with Post his experience working on both, while dealing with interruptions from the COVID outbreak two years ago. At the time, the film was the first to make use of Sony's Venice camera, which is now in its second gen- eration. Claudio Miranda shot the feature, while Jeff Cronenweth served as DP on the music video, which was also captured with the Venice camera. Turn to page 16 to hear from Kosinski about how the projects all came together. Iain Blair caught up with director David Leitch to learn about his work on the Brad Pitt-led feature, Bullet Train. The action/comedy also stars Sandra Bullock, Zazie Beets, Aaron Taylor- Johnson, Joey King and Bad Bunny, and brought together a team of creatives that Leitch often works with, including his wife, producer Kelly McCormick. The film is set in Japan, but was shot in Los Angeles on the Sony lot. Virtual production techniques, including LED screens, were used to create the illusion of the train traveling through Japan. The team at Double Negative, led by VFX supervisor Michael Brazelton, created over 1,200 VFX shots for the film. You can learn more by turning to page 14. In Disney-Pixar's CG animated Lightyear, audiences learn the backstory behind popular Toy Story (1995) character Buzz Lightyear. The original film would be followed by three more, while cementing Pixar as a leader in feature animation. Writer Trevor Hogg heard from direc- tor Angus MacLane and his creative team about how the franchise would expand, and the challenges the latest release presented. Turn to page 18 for full coverage. Warner Bros. Pictures' also has a hit with their drama Elvis, which stars Austin Butler in the title role. Directed by Baz Luhrmann, the film provides insight into the role of Colonel Tom Parker (portrayed by Tom Hanks), who served as Elvis' manager. The film was produced and posted in Australia, and I had a change to speak with the team of colorists that kept the film's look true to its period setting. Blackmagic Design's DaVinci Resolve was instrumental in allowing the team to collaborate side-by-side and remotely as the film made its way through post production. You can check out our cover story on page 22. Beyond our "Summer Movies" coverage, we also have reporting on a number of Emmy- nominated creatives (page 24), brand-new music videos (page 28), and new cloud storage solutions from Blackmagic Design ("Review," page 36), so take time to look through the issue and visit us online at postmagazine.com for additional coverage.
