Roth Estate introduces a Sauvignon Blanc he Alexander Valley AVA overlaps the Russian River Valley slightly at its southern end, and runs north to Mendocino. The appellation has a number of micro-climates and mostly gravelly soil that is especially well-suited to Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet and Sauvignon Blanc. Coastal fog makes its way up the Russian River Valley to cool off nights in this otherwise warm-day- time AVA. t Roth Estate made its fi rst Sauvignon Blanc, a 2009 vintage, from vineyards adjacent to the Russian River. Warmer sites lend tropical fl avors, while cooler vineyard sites provide crispness. From an estate already well-known for its Cabernets, this white Bordeaux-style counterpart is a great summer-sipper for its melon and pineapple fl avors combined with the crisp and ever so elegant hay notes. Its lower alcohol content is refreshing and Bordeaux-like and keeps you cool on hot summer days. It’s wonderful as an aperitif, and its brightness makes it an easy pairing with summer and picnic fare. This is a well-crafted wine! —Marian Jansen Op de Haar PHOTO BY ANDY KATZ PHOTO BY PETER GRIFFITH
