LONGBEACHMAGAZINE.COM 21 ORIGAMI FUN THIS MONTH IN LONG BEACH WRITTEN BY DANIEL RAMIREZ Mobis Transportation/Bikestation made Bloomberg Businessweek's list of 25 Most Promising Social Entrepreneurs. The Bikestation has been successful in promoting alternative forms of transportation that encourages social change. With headquarters in Long Beach, the bikestation offers electronic bike parking and services to those who have shifted from the car commute. On July 14, Parker's Lighthouse hosted the "Schuck and Swallow" contest benefitting Miller Children's Hospital. Teams battled for the Oyster Champion title by having one member open the oyster while the other swallows as many as possible in ten minutes. Mastro's Ocean Club of Newport Beach won by swallowing 122 oysters. City officials launched the Long Beach Green Business Recognition Program in July that showcases businesses who make green efforts. Businesses can nominate themselves by sharing their role in caring for the environment. Each month, a different business will be honored on the Sustainable City Commission website and meeting. Penny Lane took the top spot at the 15th annual Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals at Los Alamitos Race Course. The 50-yard race is biggest fundraiser for the Seal Beach Animal Care Center that works in finding homes for stray animals. Mayor Bob Foster, Councilman Robert Garcia, and Habitat for Humanity of Greater L.A. surprised the Lopez family with news they had received a new home. The five-member Lopez family will soon move on from their one bedroom apartment. Habitat for Humanity with the City of Long Beach has completed three new affordable houses destined for needy families. Locals together with youth programs hit the hammer and nails to save miles of shelving from the closed Acres of Books. The salvaged wood will be dispersed to the community to build special projects and gardens. The many books were also saved and sold at a fundraiser. Guests were given a hands-on origami experience at the Origami Festival at the Miller Japanese Garden on July 11 held at CSULB. The Japanese folding technique was taught to guests who learned various forms as well as Japanese calligraphy. SCENE &HEARD SHUCK AND SWALLOW! WEINER RACE A BIKING SUCCESS GREEN RECOGNITION WELCOME HOME! ACRES OF GOODNESS The Long Beach City Council met on July 20 for the inaugural ceremony at City Hall to swear in newly city officials. The inauguration ceremonies included recognition and introduction of the mayor, city attorney, city auditor, city prosecutor and councilmembers from the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th and 9th to the audience.
