Great Schools make Great Communities Taking Jake McKoskey (left) off-guard during class is WJBR's Charlie Maxx. Also with him is Jeff Robinson of Deerfield Inn, donating dinner for two, and his principal, Curtis Bedford (far right). Surprised by her Aspira Club students is Vivian Morales, Christina Para, who is just right of center holding a blue folder. Newark High's Vivian Morales is WDSD's AllStar Educator of the Month ominated by Donna Reed, librarian and former state senator, Vivian Morales was chosen by WDSD to be their January All-Star Educator of the Month. Says Reed, "She helps over a hundred students at the school every week. Being especially involved in engaging Latino students within Newark High School to encourage national pride and academic advancement. One of her biggest accomplishments has been setting up the Aspira Club, a group that brings together students of all nationalities to further their education and build leadership skills. She N has been leading the club for multiple years and aids all of the 50+ members. Overall, she is a charismatic leader within Newark High School and deserves to be recognized for her efforts." Reed held a surprise party for Morales and her Aspira Club students the day we came to honor her with a certificate, Wawa gift card and a Dr. Seuss logo item. But it was her students, the surprise visit from her two daughters, and the care taken by Mrs. Reed to honor her in this way that brought tears to her eyes. Congratulations and many thanks, Mrs. Morales! C With Judi Townsend is her son, Bryan, newly-elected state senator for District 11. To her right is WJBR morning personality John Hanson. Next to the senator is DSEA President Frederika Jenner and to the far left is Carolyn Hart, her former student. www.dsea.org ominated by friend Debra Stecher, the WJBR Teacher of the Month for February is Jake McKosky, a health, physical education and AVID teacher at Newark High School. Preparation is key to his success as a fine, young teacher. He connects with his students, treating them with respect, not only as students, but as individuals. "Jake McKosky is quite aware that not all students learn in the same manner. He will find the best approach to reach and teach each and every student. Not only is he a teacher, he is a remarkable coach as well. He spreads his enthusiasm and dedication on and off the field." McKosky received a plaque and gift card for dinner for two from the Deerfield Inn, during a surprise visit from radio personality Charlie Maxx. DSEA gave him a Cat in the Hat sports cap! Red Clay's Judi Townsend January Teacher of the Month hosen for the month of January, Judi Townsend has been teaching Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) for 36 years. We imagine there are lots of former A.I. duPont High School students who will be glad to see her recognized. She was nominated by Carolyn Hart, a former student. "Mrs. Townsend specifically teaches Textiles and Clothing, and has touched so many lives through her work. I graduated in 2010 from A.I., and when I decided that I wanted to be an FCS teacher, she was and still is a huge help in making sure that I am successful in college. She is one of the reasons that I want to Newark High's Jake McKosky February Teacher of the Month become an FCS teacher. She loves what she does, and it just inspired me.
