Reac Across America Contest Winners At Southern Elementary School in Colonial, it's Read Across America Day, and Lt. Gov. Matt Denn is on hand to read to the fourth and fifth graders. He then asks if the students have any questions about what the Lt. Governor does! Hats off to reading! Congratulations to the winners of the DSEA Read Across America video/poster/ essay contests for 2013 tudents in grades K-8 could either enter a poster or a video related to Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who, the theme of which is having respect for everyone, "no matter how small." The topic lent itself to great entries related to bullying. Students in grades 9-12 had the option of entering a video or an essay related to a more obscure Dr. Seuss book entitled The Butter Battle Book. In this book, the Yooks and the Zooks escalate the tension between each other with bigger and bigger weapons. Their beef ? Which side of one's bread the butter should go on. This year we had a whopping 240 entries. We thank our outside judges: Shirley Price-Roane, manager of the Newspapers in Education program of the News Journal; Mike Li and Jude Quinn of FuturTech. We thank FuturTech and the News Journal's Newspapers in Education Program for partnering with us to promote this contest. And, we thank the News Journal who donated the space for the full page display ad pictured here which ran on March 7. You can watch the winning videos, see the winning posters, and read the winning essay on our Read Across America page at www.dsea.org/ReadAcross2013 /Home.html. We are currently visiting all of the winners at their schools with appropriate prizes including U.S. savings bonds, gift certificates to book stores, Dr. Seuss logo items, and pizza parties! Watch for information this fall on the theme for next year's Read Across America contests. NEA's Read Across America Day, March 2, honors the birthday anniversary of Dr. Seuss.
