B E S T. W O R S T. W E E K E N D . E V E R . | P E R S P E C T I V E 8 7 DAWN SNYDER: This August, Netflix will be launching a new series, Best. Worst. Weekend. Ever. (BWWE). When asked to design the series, this project provided me the opportunity to hire a variety of Art Directors Guild members from various crafts, something that is not always possible on a half-hour single-camera series. The experience proved to be richly creative, in spite of the financial limitations inherent in half-hour television. I first read episode one of Netflix's new half-hour single-camera series BWWE in August of 2017, a week before I was hired. Immediately, I was intrigued by the challenge of designing a Comic- Con and excited about the broad comedic moment where the show's heroes "accidentally" drive a tour bus into the family home. . .all on the slim budget of a first season half-hour single-camera series. But I had not considered that I would also have a hand in designing the scripted hero comic book series. Since the writer/creators had been working on the scripts for a few months, and completed all eight episodes, I figured they must have started crafting the custom comic series. The day I was hired, the show was, after all, six weeks away from shooting. But, as I was to discover, no work had been started on the comic series, which was the driving motivator for the story and the actions of the main characters, four teenagers. Quickly I began searching for an artist within the ADG's ranks of Illustrators whose style was reminiscent of 1980s comic book artists such as Jack Kirby. After showing Jeremy Garelick, the director, the work of three ADG Illustrators, we hired Tim Burgard. Tim began by designing the four hero characters and their costumes. Costume A.
