58 • THE ARTISAN FALL 2017 Patricia Budz (1956-2017) Journeyman Hair Stylist Once in a while, there are members who you could always count on, no matter how tough the situation. Patty Budz was one of those people. Tiny, wiry and with wonderful skills, tough talk- ing Patty had no grey areas and no filters, but she had a heart of gold and was always there to help. She joined Local 706 in 1977 and originally worked at Warner Bros. and Universal Studios. She was occasionally a department head, but primarily she worked as a key hair stylist or as extra hands when needed. Her nimble fingers could create any kind of hair style needed, and her sense of humor kept people laughing even when condi- tions were miserable. She knew what was happening on every production in town, because she worked on all of them. She never sat idly by. In the early 2000s, she challenged the concept of hair stylists and make-up artists differen- tial in pay and what was perceived as "better conditions." Patty fought tirelessly to help her sisters and brothers and volunteered her time whenever she was able. She earned her Gold Card in 2007 and retired in 2009, moved to Northern California to be closer to family. Local 706 was notified in September 2017 that Sister Patricia Budz had passed away in August 2017. There was no notification of any services or cause of death, but her In Memoriam Baby Boy Chance James Daranyi Palczewski was born at Cedars-Sinai Hospital on Labor Day 2017 by natural birth, and weighed in at 8 pounds, 11 ounces. He's been lifting his neck up since day one and feeding like a champ! Chance's mother is make-up artist Jennifer Daranyi. Grandbaby! Joureyman make-up artist Natalie Wood is a grandma! Sophia Grace Diament was born May 3, 2017, weigh- ing 8 pounds, 6 ounces. Her mother is Natalie's daughter, executive producer Chrissy Diament, who does com- mercials. EXTENDED FAMILY NEWS Twins for Grandpa! Here are Elizabeth & Mary, daughters of make-up artist Ed French's son Spencer, and his wife Jessica. The twins were born about six weeks premature on June 17, 2017, at Walter Reed Hospital and they are doing fine. Cheers. Tom Ellingwood (1932-2017) Journeyman Make-up Artist His first job upon joining Local 706 in 1966, was working on Star Trek for Desilu Studios. Between 1972 and 1987, Tom was Burt Reynold's make-up artist for at least 25 films where he is credited: The Longest Yard, Smokey and the Bandit (1 & 2), The Cannonball Run (1 & 2), The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Hooper, The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing, Stroker Ace, Sharkey's Machine. The outstanding list goes on and on until 1987, with their final film together being Malone. When not working with Reynolds, Ellingwood worked on some of the most iconic films of the 1970s and '80s, most notably Dillinger, The Choirboys and every union member's favorite—Norma Rae. Tom transitioned into television and was on the series MacGyver (1986-1987). He did movies-of-the-week and then the series Sisters for nearly the entire run of the show (1991- 1996). A hugely talented make-up artist, Tom was intimidating to some, until you met him and got to know him. He loved visiting other crew members on sets and would go visiting on the studio lot, catching up on the news of the day. health had been troublesome for a number of years. Rest in peace, dear Patty.
