4 • THE ARTISAN FALL 2017 Tremendous congratulations to our 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award recipients, three-time Oscar-winning journeyman make-up artist Greg Cannom and four-time Emmy-winning journeyman hair stylist Mary Guerrero. Both have also won our Guild Awards, among numerous other accolades, but the Lifetime Achievement Awards show the appreciation we as artists have for one another on a different scale. These outstanding artists are such wonderful examples, not only of outstanding artistry, but have shared their knowledge and given their time to their union sisters and brothers. They truly deserve to be honored and applauded for their lifetime of excellence and generosity of spirit. Both Greg and Mary will be honored at our Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards on February 24, 2018. Please join us to celebrate their careers. We will be presenting our Distinguished Artisan statue to one of the most prolific actors of this generation, Gary Oldman. Gary is known as a chameleon, an actor who chang- es his appearance, his voice, everything about himself from film to film. Every make-up artist and hair stylist wishes they could always work with actors like Oldman. He has worked with the finest artisans in the world, he collaborates with the team and probably knows more about make-up and hair than any other actor. He appreciates and allows the team to do their job, to prepare properly and take the time they need to apply their crafts without compromise. He does not have tolerance for actors who do not allow the artists to do their job to its fullest. He is not one to be on his cellphone, have contraptions tied to his head, eat, have animated discus- sions or fidget around with others outside the team that is transforming him. He uses his rehearsal time to do his job so it does not interfere with our process. He wants it done perfectly and gives everyone their professional consideration. Study the films he has completely altered his appearance with the talents of the make-up and hair teams: Darkest Hour, Sid and Nancy, Hannibal, Bram Stoker's Dracula, The Dark Knight and dozens of other films. When you consider the hundreds and hundreds of hours he has spent allowing us to transform him, we are delighted to present him with our Distinguished Artisan Award to show our appreciation. I was thrilled to be able to tell Gary in person that we were the ones honoring him. He was genuinely thrilled. The Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards is the ONLY awards show dedicated exclusively to the artists who work in the entertainment industry. It was developed solely to celebrate us, and everyone agrees it is the most fun of all the award shows! While we do red carpet, photo shoots and the like, we celebrate the hardworking artists from all over the world who create characters in fea- ture films, all categories of television, theater, commercials and the internet. Five years ago when we resurrected this show and developed it so it is funded by sponsorships (not your dues), it was our way to celebrate us. Join us as we celebrate the global work of artists and appreciate the ever-growing advancements in our crafts. I sat today with an Academy Award-winning make-up artist who was so proud to have received our beautiful Guild Award statue because it symbolized his peers appreciating his work—it meant more than anything We are going to make a few changes this year, to make us more visible to the world via live stream- ing. It has always been said that Hollywood influenced more people than anything else in the world, much more so than any "influencer" who has never left their bathroom mirror. Our Guild has real influencers who have created changes in our industry and the real world copies what they do. We will be engaging some of our own 706 "influencers" for our show, this is about us. We're the ones who create the real change. Whether it is the development of a new tool or product, a new formulation, a new look that all of the country will wear for the next five years, this is about how we influence the world. This year's show is promising to be the best ever and it's all about you.
