Getting High ASIA in Tokyo STAYING AT THE TOP IN JAPAN'S MODERN METROPOLIS by Anthony Dias Blue T okyo is one of the most populous and densely packed cities in the world. You would think that a hotel room with a great view would be hard to come by there. Think again. The Japanese are well-known for resourcefulness and they have solved the room-with-a-view-of-the-airshaft problem with a flourish. This throbbing Japanese metropolis is the home of the modern multi-purpose skyscraper. Here's the concept: put retail spaces—stores and restaurants—on the first two or three floors, then top those with 30 or so floors of office space and crown it with ten or 15 floors of hotel. Voila! The lowest floor of the hotel has gorgeous views. Pretty clever, eh? On my most recent trip to the city formerly known as Edo I decided to check out this concept at three of the capital's best hostelries, all of which employ this lofty concept. The New York Grill at Park Hyatt Tokyo offers jetliner views. CREDIT: 128 / the tasting panel / october 2012
