On July 30, educators and students got a taste of the DGA's Visual History Program when it was on exhibition during the University Film and Video Association's (UFVA) 71st Annual Conference held at California State University Los Angeles. DGA Special Projects Committee Chair Jeremy Kagan promoted the Visual History Program as a free academic resource to professors, scholars and filmmakers. Kagan also demonstrated the Program's database search functionality and spoke about other resources available to the public via the DGA website such as the DGA Quarterly and podcasts of Guild events. Members of the DGA staff were also on hand for one-on-one and small group demos of the site and its resources. Founded in 1946, UFVA is an international organization of professors, scholars, and film and video makers dedicated to furthering and developing the instruction of motion picture and television media. VISUAL HISTORY PROGRAM Recent Update: Director Oz Scott Scott recounts his 30-plus year career directing episodic television and TV movies, his beginnings in theater, and his feature film, Bustin' Loose, starring Richard Pryor. Scott on the value of listening: "The best way to do your job is to listen. If you listen you're gonna hear something that you can use. When I go onto a set to do an episode, I need to hear the actors read it. I know how I want to shoot it. I know how I want to block it. But when I hear it, I hear things like, 'Oh you're gonna do it like that. That's interesting.' Those are the things you find when you listen, as opposed to when you come in and just say, 'This is what I want.' Listen to what they have to say and then make your mind, because it may be great." The Visual History Program website contains hundreds of hours of videotaped interviews with directors and director's team members discussing their careers and reflections on all aspects of the creative process in film, television and other media. These interviews are indexed for quick retrieval of segments pertaining to specific topics of interest within a particular interview or across the entire collection.
