UNIQUE MATERIALS FROM ON AIR DESIGN IN VAN NUYS by Michael Baugh, Production Designer A decade ago, marble papers, period wallcoverings and complex inlays were created by hand painting or purchasing expensive antique materials. Today, more often than not, these products are created in a modern graphics shop like the one at On Air Design. Formerly Oi Graphics, the shop is a full-service graphics and print house catering to the entertainment industry. Their cutting-edge digital production facility allows them to easily create faux finishes and simulate surfaces like tile or brick. They combine CNC routing, flat-bed printing and an assortment of materials to create professional signs and props quickly and inexpensively, understanding the industry's requirements and efficiently managing time, quality and cost. Their cutting system is a 3-axis CNC router with an array of tools for cutting paper, vinyl and fabric, as well as creasing corrugated board and performing V-cuts. The router module can also cut aluminum, plywood, acrylic and other rigid media with ease. Not too many years ago, they upgraded their printing capabilities from the standard large format to grand format, which means they can print up to sixteen-feet wide. With both an Art Directors Guild contract, and a second contract with the Motion Picture Set Painters & Sign Writers, On Air is able to maintain a flexible workforce of people who can draw, paint and tell stories visually. Their team has been designing for the industry for a long time, and their artists are skilled, professional and they speak our language. They are a substantial and valuable resource.
