Stepping into this role I have been able to stand by my strong belief in the concept of servant leadership, to first serve then lead. A servant leader is a lifelong learner. Their leadership skills include listening, consensus building, ethical decision making, and building and maintenance of a sense of community. While it is often seen as "soft", it requires the creation of vision, the setting of challenging goals and the sharing of information. It requires a strong sense of balance between performance and skill with conflict resolution. I thank you for the opportunity to continue to serve and lead both students and teachers, across Arizona, toward a better future. Over a decade's worth of research shows that the students of Board-certified teachers out- perform their peers in other classrooms on achievement tests and that schools and dis- tricts with a high concentration of NBCTs see marked improvements in school culture, collaboration and teacher reten- tion. To achieve dramatic improvement in education for all students, National Board is working with state, district and higher education partners to ensure that many more teachers have the opportunity to pursue Board certification. The founding mission of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards is to advance the quality of teaching and learning by: (1) maintaining high and rigorous standards for what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do; (2) providing a national voluntary system certifying teachers who meet these stan- dards; and (3) advocating related educa- tion reforms to integrate National Board Certification in American education and to capitalize on the expertise of National Board Certified Teachers. Recognized as the "gold standard" in teacher certifica- tion, the National Board believes higher standards for teachers mean better learning for students. Read more about Arizona NBCTs on page 40.
