SPRING 2016 | ADVOCATE 21 Professional Development elping teachers perform at their best is at the heart of the National Board. On December 7, 2015, 1,826 teachers earned their National Board Certifi cation while 2,903 have renewed Board certifi cation. Just as I was when I achieved this milestone, these teachers should be extraordinarily proud as they have met the profession's highest standards. The public should be equally pleased because these teachers have measurable knowledge and skills that will advance student learning," said Peggy Brookins, National Board Certifi ed Teacher (NBCT) and President and CEO of National Board. This past December the Board announced that 48 teachers from Arizona had attained National Board Certifi cation and 22 teachers had renewed their Board certifi cation. Arizona currently ranks nineteenth in the number of total NBCTs and fi fth in growth over three years. Through National Board Certifi cation, teachers demonstrate that their teaching meets the profession's standards for accomplished practice through a rigorous, peer-reviewed, and performance- based process, similar to professional certifi cation in fi elds such as medicine. More than a decade of research confi rms that students taught by Board-certifi ed teachers learn more than students taught by other teachers. Kathy Wiebke, Executive Director of the Arizona K12 Center and AEA member, was Arizona's fi rst National Board Certifi ed Teacher. She went through the process during the 1995–1996 school year, and said it changed her teaching signifi cantly. "I found my teaching practice improved. I became an even stronger teacher as a result of going through it," she said. "I also saw how it impacted people around me. I began to have deeper conversations about teaching and learning because I needed feedback from my peers. The process was extremely diffi cult but really changed how I look at my practice and the impact I have on children." With more than 112,000 Board-certifi ed teachers across the US, thousands of students in every state benefi t daily from teachers performing at the top of their craft. This year marks a transition point for Board certifi cation.
