SPRING 2016 | ADVOCATE 33 Association Governance Nidia Lias In 21 years as an active member, I have grown up in the association through the multiple opportunities I've had. I've worked as an ESP, a classroom teacher, and as a teacher recruiter. I was lucky enough to teach before NCLB and during the era of over-testing. With you, my fellow members, I rallied for 301 and candidates that supported the idea of a quality public education for all of Arizona's children. I've also had to challenge those that don't. I've embraced the hard work that comes with being a mentor, local leader, state leader, and national leader on many different projects. Like many of you, I have gladly given weeknights, weekends and vacation time to this association because it has paid me back in spades. I've been able to pursue my passions, such as social justice for all, equity in the classroom, and the core values of the AEA. I've been committed to every opportunity to be engaged in my profession, my community and the issues about which I'm passionate. It fills me with resolve to keep going when things get tough, and it empowers me to celebrate when we succeed. Most of all, I truly value the relationships I've built with everyone I have met along the way and the powerful work we've done together. Through it all, it's everything I've been a part of and everyone I've worked with that motivates me to seek continued involvement. Therefore, I'm seeking your support to be the next AEA Vice- President. My role as a local association president representing both certified and classified employees provides me the perspective of both job categories in our organization. I am a native Arizonan from the small community of Globe-Miami, so I fully understand the hardships rural and small districts have in remaining competitive to other districts. Lastly, I have eight years of experience as treasurer in two other organizations, as well as in my current district position, where I manage eight federal and state grants.
