54 { THE SOMM JOURNAL } FEBRUARY/MARCH 2016 TASTING NOTES All prices are suggested retail. Austin Hope 2012 Roussanne, Hope Family Vineyard, Paso Robles ($20) Yellow peach and apricot on the nose with hints of burnt orange marmalade. The palate has weight and structure with notes of stone fruit and Meyer lemon backed up with nice acidity. There's a vibrant tingle on the mouthfeel reminiscent of candied orange peel. The estate Hope Family Vineyard is in Paso's Templeton Gap District. Austin Hope 2013 Syrah, Hope Family Vineyard, Paso Robles ($55) This is a massive wine, nearly black in color with a deep purple-red meniscus. Expressive aromas of grilled red meat, hickory smoke, mocha and blackberry pie. Silky on the palate with flavors of blueberry jam and white peppercorns up front, broadening with hints clove and nutmeg. Finishes with spicy, velvety tannins, notes of smoked meat and hints sage brush. There are a lot of chapters in this book as the wine continues to evolve rapidly in the glass. { milestones } Austin Hope in the winery. "I love blending and from day one we've been blenders." "As this area matures, there's new plantings, new clones—we're like kids in a candy store really"
