{ celebrations } SINCE OPENING IN NEW YORK IN 2010, EATALY HAS become a destination for locals and travelers alike. Some come for the food, others venture for the beer and wine, while others simply visit for the jovial and bustling market environment. Regardless of their intentions and origins, upon entering everyone is exposed to a panoply of informational signs and banners celebrating the vast and limitless world of Italian cuisine. On a seasonal autumn evening in New York, we welcomed Jancis Robinson and her team to celebrate the release of the 4th edition of The Oxford Companion to Wine. To up the ante, we added a focused tasting of Brunello di Montalcino 2010 featuring more than 30 producers at our rooftop brewery and restaurant, La Birreria. Guests were given the opportunity to mingle with producers, taste through an impeccable selection of the 2010 vintage, and take home a copy of the newly printed book. The air was warm, the wines were fresh, and the crowd gave venerable praise to Robinson as she opened up about the lat - est edition and all the great new features. Since the original version was published 1994, The Oxford Companion has become an indispensable resource for all wine drinkers and the updated version offers a wealth of updated information and detailed new passages about wine apps, biodynamic farming and maps, among other revisions. As for the copious selection of Brunello wines, they were the perfect accompaniment to a night devoted to celebration and literature. While still young, many showed restraint with velvety tannins and firm acidity, and offered up nuanced hints of trade - mark Sangiovese—blends of cherry fruits, leather and piquant notes of balsamic. Some, such as the Tenuta Silvio Nardi and Mastrojanni , were on the lighter side, while others, such as the Il Marroneto and Canalicchio di Sopra, had deeper brooding flavors and colors. Just like the new book that we were celebrating, the wines from this vintage will carry strong and bring to pleasure to many wine enthusiasts for years to come. Hopefully when the 5th edition of The Oxford Companion is released years in the future, we'll revisit these wines and see how they've evolved, along with the ever-changing world of wine around us.
