THE INCREDIBLE SELECTION OF UNIQUE, high-quality wine for sommeliers to choose from all over the world these days has dramatically increased the "artistic" opportunities for U.S. sommeliers. However, as a businessman, how easy will it be to sell through that wonderful Txakoli Getariako that you just bought ten cases of at a close-out price? Will the wine sell through fast enough to justify its inventory cost? That's the life of a sommelier : sharing their "finds" with the world, while maintaining a responsibility to their bottom line beverage cost. At San Diego's SommCon this year, "Solution-Based Technologies to Drive Beverage Profits" showcased four different tech - nologies that have direct impact on beverage costs, improving the customer experience and identifying consumer preferences. See page 74 for Part I of this report. For John Jordan, CEO of Jordan Winery, it was his frustration as a restaurant customer that led him to create the groundbreaking Tastevin in 2010. After ordering several bottles from a renowned wine list at a highly acclaimed restaurant and finding out each time that the wine was "out of stock," Jordan knew there had to be a better solution. That solution Jordan created was Tastevin, a cloud-based iPad wine list software now being used in more than 300 venues in 39 states. One of the features of Jordan's software, naturally, is the opportunity to enter hard inventory directly into an iPad list daily and eliminate those frustrating out-of-stock scenarios for customers. Other features of Tastevin include inventory syncing and ordering functions, as well as, providing helpful information within the iPad list about each wine and their food affinities with menu items.
