WHAT WE’RE READING The Flavors of Italian Life in Sedona’s Red Rocks isa Dahl describes her humble beginnings in the world of cooking by calling herself a “peasant chef.” On March 27, 1994, her son lost his life when he tried, as a Good Samaritan, to prevent a robbery in San Francisco. In tribute to the life her son lived, she founded Dahl & Di Luca Ristorante Italiano in Sedona, Arizona with her business partner Andrea Di Luca. Following the success of Dahl & Di Luca, the duo embarked on a new Italian concept in Sedona, Cucina Rustica. Following her success as a restaurateur, Dahl wanted to share her passion for nature’s organic goods with others. By means of her cookbook, The Elixir of Life, she is able to dish out the joy that Italian cuisine and fresh produce create in her life. From simple soups to sauces, from salads to side dishes, The Elixir of Life covers the essentials for creating a meal, but also serves up profound meditations on travel, spirituality and cuisine. Dahl takes the reader on a tour of Tuscany, followed by a warm reception among the red rocks of Sedona and the inner pathways of her soul. For more information and to order the book, go to www. An Upright Read R ex Pickett, author of Sideways, the road trip novel that became a movie and influenced a generation of new wine drinkers, has changed direction with his new sequel, Vertical (Loose Gravel Press, $15). Miles and Jack hit the road once more, this time with Miles’s stroke-addled mother and her pot-smoking Filipina caretaker on board. The novel opens at the World of Pinot Noir event on California’s Central Coast, and follows them on their misadventures northward from one wine region to another, ending in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. “I have led a surreal life since the movie Sideways was released,” says Pickett, who was overwhelmed by the success of the film. “Vertical captures both the highs and lows of that real existence.” A promotional signing and speaking tour is tentatively scheduled for spring 2011, beginning in Paso Robles March 18–20 at the 19th Annual Paso Robles Zinfandel Festival and culminating in the Willamette Valley. Inspired gonzo writer and TASTING PANEL contributor Dan Dunn (who also happens to write for a well-thumbed little glossy called Playboy) is back with a new book. Living Loaded: Tales of Sex, Salvation, and the Pursuit of the Never-Ending Happy Hour (Broadway Books, $14.99) takes up where his previous tome, Nobody Likes a Quitter (and other reasons to avoid rehab), left off—on a barstool in one of the planet’s zillion drinking establishments. Dunn’s mission is to experience the absolute hell out of each and every one of them, or get thrown out trying. He’s even created a taxonomy of “barchetypes” to help structure his often foul-mouthed, always hilarious and sometimes touching quest. For those follow- ing along at home, 16 original cocktail recipes were created just for this book by the likes of Bobby “G” Gleason, Jeffrey Morgenthaler and Jonathan Pogash. Bail bond not included.
