Fore! Tournament raises $6,500 Donations The extreme heat didn't stop 98 golfers – DSEA members, family, supporters and friends from endorsed organizations – from coming out for our annual Future Teacher Benefit Golf Tournament. eld at Maple Dale Country Club in Dover, the Future Teacher Golf Tournament is the sole source of funds for the Christopher K. Smith Scholarship. Thanks to its success, we are now awarding two $4,000 scholarships each year to outstanding Delaware students – future colleagues. This year's awardees are Carolyn Smith of Seaford High School and Bethany Killmon of Sussex Tech, pictured here. Since 1990, DSEA has awarded scholarship money to 34 outstanding Delaware students. H Bethany Killmon, with an overall Grade Point Average of 98 from Sussex Technical High School, will enter Salisbury University this fall to major in Special Education. Carolyn Smith plans to teach elementary education in Delaware. A 2013 graduate of Seaford High School, she ranked 5th in her class of 195 with a GPA of 4.2241. The current scholarship is named after Christopher K. Smith, who in 1969 single-handedly organized his colleagues from the De La Warr School District to lobby the legislature for duty-free lunch for elementary teachers. He passed away suddenly in 1989. He was the husband of former DSEA President Earlene Gillan-Smith. The DSEA Exec. Board recently voted to create a second scholarship, to be named after former DSEA Exec. Director Howard Weinberg. This scholarship will be considered for the sons or daughters of DSEA members for any course of study The details are . still being worked out. More later.
