mind-boggling. Some examples of what the Art Department had to accomplish are: A London backlot set of a destroyed Mexican town connected to a destroyed Spanish town location to open the movie. - Several New York interior sets shot outside of London on location, combined with the exteriors of these sets found at the end of the shoot in New York City. - A hotel exterior and lobby in Prague connecting to the upstairs hallway and rooms in an English country club in London. - A boat ride in Venice canals, shot with green screen on stage in London, with plates in Venice, leading to an exterior location in Venice, walking into a location set in London dressed as Venetian boat repair shop. (You might need to read that one more than once!) - A hotel exterior in Venice with interiors built on stage in London - Several portions of the Rialto bridge area in Venice recreated and re-positioned to serve the action at the London backlot in the large tank, matching the water color (!) and mainly, the exquisite Venetian architecture. These last two are the sets that I want to cover here in detail. It was determined very early on that the Venetian hostel interiors were to be built on stage in London, at the Leavesden Studios. Even before the exterior location in Venice was decided. With some references and my first scout experience in Venice, I had a very clear idea of the look I was after. In Venice, everything is (sadly) slowly sinking. It was important to me to use this aspect in the set. It helped to connect the exterior locations to the interior sets. The idea was to always to have the presence of a water element, either practically or by using a light effect. With Art Director Joe Howard, I designed a set entrance from a small alley to simplify the visual connection in Venice. It was easier to scout an alley entrance than to match an entire facade or B A A. VENICE LOCATION FOR THE EXTERIOR OF THE HOSTEL. SET PHOTO. B.
