These were the last words I ever expected to hear acclaimed actor Edward Norton say to me as he passed by while I kissed my fiancé. He followed this up with a direct "Heel up, Mickle!" a reminder that the pointy heel on my dainty shoe should be elevated while this smooching took place. I smirked and shook my head in disbelief over this surreal life moment, amazed that the last several years had culminated into this memorable evening. But let me start at the beginning… Six years earlier, I received a call from a dear friend and beloved producer, David Koplan. He asked for my assistance in assembling an Art Department budget for a film he was helping to develop. Written by Edward Norton, the screenplay was based on the Jonathan Lethem novel Motherless Brooklyn. The story follows detective Lionel Essrog on his quest to solve the murder of his mentor Frank Minna while simultaneously uncovering deep-seeded corruption in the development of New York City. Edward reframed the 1999 novel's A S m o o c h i n g f o r E d w a r d M O T H E R L E S S B R O O K L Y N B Y B E T H M I C K L E , P R O D U C T I O N D E S I G N E R "Get a room, Mickle."
