In the film, Dorothy Gale is swept away from a farm in Kansas to a magical land of Oz in a tornado and embarks on a quest with her new friends to see the Wizard who can help her return home to Kansas and help her friends as well. Filming commenced October 13, 1938, on the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studio lot in Culver City. It was completed on March 16, 1939, at a then-unheard-of cost of $2,777,000. The illustration done with graphite and opaque watercolor matted on illustration board, is by Art Director Jack Martin Smith. Smith started as a sketch artist at MGM in the late 1930s, and went on to a long and successful career as an Art Director, with four Academy Award nominations and two wins. The film only lists three people for the Art Department credits: Cedric Gibbons as Art Director, William A. Horning as Associate Art Director and Edwin B. Willis for Set Decorations. A.
