The Creative Arts Emmy honors outstanding artistic and technical achievement, and is primarily focused on the many crafts involved in television production. Both evenings were opened with a musical number by Rachel Bloom, singing a tribute to the normally unsung heros of production. The Saturday show featured awards for Production Design for variey shows, both series and specials, and the design awards for narrative programs were given during the Sunday night show. On Saturday night, the design team at Saturday Night Live received the Emmy for variety series for the third year in a row. SNL received eighteen nominations and fi ve Emmys for the year's work. Rent: Live won the variety special award that night, it was the fi rst win for Production Designer Jason Sherwood, Art Director Adam Rowe and Set Decorator John Sparano. The show received fi ve nominations in total and two wins. During the Sunday awards show, the narrative design awards were won by the teams from The Handmaid's Tale, Chernobyl and Russian Doll. Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale was not supposed to be a major Emmy player this year due to the dates the series aired and award deadlines, but the show received eleven nominations and three awards. It was the second year in a row Production Designer Elisabeth Williams and Art Director Martha Sparrow picked up the award and Set Decorator Robert Hepburn's fi rst Emmy. Chernobyl was the surprise hit for HBO with nineteen nominations and ten wins. It was the fi rst nomination and Emmy win for Production Designer Luke Hull, Art Director Karen Wakefi eld and Set Decorator Claire Levinson-Gendler. It was also a fi rst-time win for Production Designer Michael Bricker, Art Director John Cox and Set Decorator Jessica Petruccelli for Russian Doll. Netfl ix's Russian Doll received thirteen nominations and three wins. Overall, HBO received the most nomination with 137 and walked away with 34 Emmys. Top nominees for the network were Game of Thrones, Chernobyl and Barry. Netfl ix was not far behind with 117 nominations and 27 Emmy wins. leading the streaming channels with When They See Us and Russian Doll, among many others. Amazon Prime also had a strong showing with 47 nominations and 15 winners, its fl agship shows being: The Marvelous Mrs Maisel, Fleabag and The Man in the High Castle.
