G F jail of the future seen again and again in science fiction. Given the tight stage space, it became clear that the cells would need to be lit practically, because at its tightest point, the black curtain that surrounded the stage would only be eight feet away from the set. This would allow for focus to be pulled into the cells and for faster shooting on a set that would require constant gimbal management. At a certain point in the episode, the walls between the cells needed to disappear so that the three characters would be able to interact with each other. These pragmatic and directorial parameters, along with the structural requirement for the cells to use each other for support, helped determine the spoked triangular layout of the set. Harkening back to Tron, Jess chose to trace the walls in LED lights that could switch from white to red depending on the scene. This choice created a kaleidoscope of shapes, making a relatively simple environment feel like it went on forever. While Future Man is a love letter to the science fiction films of the past, it is also a love letter to the process of filmmaking. This show is one where true partnership is encouraged and expected, an environment that is fostered from the showrunners on down. We are firm believers in the power of collaboration—we love working as the designer and decorator on this show, but this world could not have been created without everyone's contributions. Together, we all make the world we created more exciting and interesting than we could have done on our own, and we are incredibly lucky to work with such a talented and generous team of Time Warriors!
