Major, 1AD Franco Zeffirelli, DIR Warren Adler - discusses his 32 years of service at the DGA including: his focus on creative rights and diversity issues, his extensive involvement on 11 of the Guild's Basic Agreement and FLTTA negotiations cycles, and his tenure as the Associate National Executive Director. Adler on the Guild's Consensus and Governance Structure: "My perception is that the Guild has had a different relationship between the professional staff and the elected leadership than the other guilds. I don't know if this is a result of anything that's written in the constitution. I think it just reflects the character of our membership and the character of our professional leadership. The elected leadership and professional staff have worked with a pretty clear sense of the roles of each and a clear sense of respect for each other. The professional staff understands that it's a membership organization; it's a democratically led organization, and that it is the role of the president and the national board and the councils to develop policies, give us direction, make decisions in certain areas that are defined. Our job is to advise them and then implement policies in accordance with their direction…The members see the amount of research and information and analysis and thought that goes into Guild policies. And the way they see this is because the professional staff shares it with the leadership, and the leadership shares it with the membership. And so, I think that the members feel that decisions are being made intelligently and because they're involved in the discussion because nothing is done behind closed doors, that members aren't involved in, that it truly is on their behalf." First-Time Episodic Directors Attend Orientation Course The DGA's Orientation Course for Episodic Television Directors recently held a session in Los Angeles on June 15. DGA Past President Paris Barclay (Station 19) and Directors Michael Spiller (Black-ish) and Tom Verica (Scandal) provided training for the attending first-time episodic television directors on their role, responsibilities and obligations. About the Program The orientation was codified in the 2017 Basic Agreement and the program was launched in July of that year. In each course, the participants also learned about the standards of the craft, their creative rights as directors and the Guild resources available to them. The attendees also received valuable advice and learned the best practices to help them succeed from some of the top directors working today. For more information about these courses and photos from previous sessions, visit their webpage in the Employer's section of www.dga.org.
